Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese met with former Apple head Tim Cook and other executives at the company’s headquarters in California on Sunday morning, Australian time, in a one-hour, closed-door meeting that followed a June phone call between the two after Apple rolled out child safety features on its devices, some inspired by Australia’s social media account ban for under-16s. International rules surrounding the use of artificial intelligence were also raised as Albanese joined a push among other middle powers at the United Nations for more regulations in the sector. Albanese said he accepts there are risks and that they need to be mitigated, stressing the need for discussion about a global framework for AI rollout because it is moving very quickly and that humans must remain in control. National AI standards were unveiled in July to require data centres to be powered by additional, renewable energy. On copyright, Albanese said writers and other creative artists would still have ownership of their work ahead of looming changes to copyright laws brought on by the rise of AI, but left the door open for a model allowing creators to opt out of their work being used to train or otherwise inform AI technology, saying the protection of the creative sector is very important and he thinks there is a way through. During the meeting, Albanese received a demonstration of Apple’s safety features.
