Meta's AI support leaves deplatformed journalists talking to a machin…

Brazilian reporters and local news outlets say suspended accounts leave them trapped in endless chatbot loops, with no way to reach a person who can help. In late April, an artificial intelligence system at Meta flagged posts on Gazeta de Vargem Grande's Facebook page as fraudulent, suspending an account opened in 2011 with 45,000 followers. The newspaper’s management said the openings had been verified with partner companies. After failing to reach anyone through Meta's customer support, they sued. On May 26, a local judge ordered Meta to restore the account within five days or face a daily fine of 500 reais. Weeks later, they had yet to reach a human at Meta, and the page was still offline. Editor Lígia Ligabue said, “Bots don't understand that. They don't understand life.” The nonprofit CTRL+Z has mapped 154 complaints from news outlets and journalists since 2025 over account suspensions, with 57 filed in 2026 alone. Meta sometimes never restores accounts, claiming technical difficulties, and often complies with court orders only once higher courts weigh in and fines exceed the cost of ignoring the order, according to Luã Cruz, CTRL+Z's litigation director.
