The concern is that the music industry will confuse the ability to produce music with the experience of becoming a musician. The finished recording is only one artifact of a life spent creating, playing bass, recording, touring, rehearsing, and carrying speaker cabinets, serving as a journal of actual lived experience. The real thing is the process before the song exists, where collaboration is key, where musicians learn to fail in front of one another, develop taste, argue over arrangements, and become capable of making something none could have made alone. A band is a small family unit, and the friction of collaboration is where true art develops.
