The government has approved 13 Responsible AI projects under the Safe & Trusted AI pillar of the IndiaAI Mission, spanning bias mitigation, privacy-preserving AI, explainability, machine unlearning, deepfake detection and AI risk assessment, according to information shared by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in the Rajya Sabha on July 24. The IndiaAI Mission was approved in March 2024 with a ₹10,371 crore outlay over five years. Approved initiatives include Saakshya, a multi-agent deepfake detection framework by IIT Jodhpur and IIT Madras; AI Vishleshak for audio-visual forgery detection; and IIT Kharagpur's real-time voice deepfake detection system. NIT Raipur is developing bias mitigation algorithms for healthcare, while IIT Delhi, IIIT Delhi and IIT Dharwad are building privacy-preserving models using federated learning. The government established the IndiaAI Safety Institute and issued India AI Governance Guidelines proposing a risk-based governance framework. Support has been identified for 20 indigenous sovereign AI model proposals, comprising 12 large language models and eight small language models, including Sarvam AI's 30-billion and 105-billion parameter models. The government has empanelled 15 compute service providers, supported 237 AI projects, sanctioned 93 lakh GPU hours, launched 12 national hackathons, supported 62 AI prototypes and deployed 20 AI solutions.
