Utility watchdog groups EarthJustice, the Alliance for Affordable Energy, and the Union of Concerned Scientists are questioning Entergy Louisiana’s plan to build new gas plants for Meta’s AI data center in North Louisiana, urging regulators to slow the process. The groups allege Entergy and Meta are withholding public information, including projected energy demand and job creation figures. EarthJustice attorney Christie Hicks cited pollution from gas turbines, including nitrogen oxides, fine particulate matter, and formaldehyde. The proposal is before the Louisiana Public Service Commission, with Alliance executive director Logan Burke arguing the decision timeline is too short. EarthJustice submitted written testimony on Friday outlining consequences of building seven new gas plants. The coalition worries ratepayers could foot the bill, though Union of Concerned Scientists senior analyst Paul Arbaje said no specific dollar amount is available because Entergy deemed much filing information confidential. Burke noted President Trump’s Ratepayer Protection Pledge lacks legal weight, leaving the Louisiana Public Service Commission as the only agency able to protect customers. Entergy Louisiana communication manager Brandon Scardigli responded that Meta is expected to generate approximately $2.6 billion in savings for customers over the next two decades, and that Entergy is reviewing testimony, including LPSC Staff’s support for moving forward under certain customer safeguards.
