Is AI Fair? New Evidence Suggests Bias Against People with Intellectu…

A new peer-reviewed study titled "Identifying Implicit Bias in LLM-based Chat AI Toward People with Intellectual Disabilities," published in the Disability and Health Journal and led by Special Olympics in collaboration with Oregon State University, reveals that AI systems are learning stereotypes and repeating them at scale for people with intellectual disabilities. The study found that five leading AI systems, including GPT-4-Turbo, consistently generated stories portraying people with ID as more dependent, childlike, and in need of supervision than people without disabilities. Researchers asked the models to create 25,000 short stories about everyday situations, some including a description of the person having ID, and used GPT-4-Turbo to analyze the stories for bias patterns. The findings indicate that AI reflects biases and shapes how people access information, influencing decisions in jobs, healthcare, and education. The study demonstrates that it is possible to measure bias in a rapid, automated way and develop methods to reduce bias over time.
