Google Inc.'s DeepMind co-founder, CEO and top AI researcher Demis Hassabis called for the creation of a United States-led global AI watchdog in an interview with Axios on Tuesday. Hassabis told the outlet that the idea has already been discussed with US President Donald Trump's administration and European officials. "The noises I've been hearing are very positive," he said, noting that, ideally, such a body could be established "by year's end." Hassabis envisaged an AI watchdog modeled on the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), a private watchdog under the oversight of the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The body would oversee all AI models, "no matter their country of origin or whether they are open or closed."
