Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have publicly criticized Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence firm, xAI, for challenging a new Minnesota law designed to stop AI-generated nude and explicit deepfake pictures. In a statement on their official website, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex accused the company of prioritizing profits over public safety, writing that "Big Tech has taken shocking steps to limit restrictions on or accountability for these objectively predatory A.I. product features." They did not name Musk directly but referred to him as the "trillionaire leader of the tech company responsible for X’s Grok." The couple cited lawsuits involving Grok from British politician Jess Asato, a family from Arkansas, and five children from Tennessee, all alleging the AI tool was used to create fake, sexually explicit images without consent. The Minnesota law, signed by Governor Tim Walz, fines companies up to $500,000 for each violation and allows victims and state lawyers to sue creators. Harry and Meghan also supported similar rules in Pennsylvania, North Dakota, and California. xAI filed court papers arguing the law is too strict, stating it already tries to block such images. U.S. District Judge Donovan W. Frank denied xAI’s request to delay the law, noting the challenge was filed just days before it took effect. A court meeting is set for August 19 in St. Paul, Minnesota.
