Universities and research institutions from Japan, the United States, and Europe are collaborating to domesticate "Physical AI," technology that moves real-world objects like robots and automobiles. Centered around Japan's National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), 14 institutions are participating, including the UK's University of Cambridge, Carnegie Mellon University, and the Canadian AI research institute "Mila." Yoshua Bengio is among the participants, forming a team of over 200 people. The research outcomes will be directly utilized by "Noetra," a new company established by a consortium of Japanese firms led by SoftBank. Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry plans to officially announce the R&D framework soon, with the government providing financial backing. The strategy is to leverage Japan's manufacturing sites and seize the initiative in Physical AI. The collaboration includes the UK's University of Oxford, Tokyo University of Science, Osaka University, Waseda University, and Keio University. AI researchers from U.S.-based Google-related companies are also expected to join. A partnership is being considered with a French startup founded by Yann LeCun. The research team plans to organize expert teams for fields including "vision," "audio," "spatial recognition," and "touch," integrating results to establish foundational technology for AI operating autonomously in the real world.
