A generative AI video of a female weathercaster, uploaded on the 20th to the YouTube channel "Weather Environment Agency" operated by Kweather, sparked online debate after spreading on social media from the 22nd. The video features a virtual character named "Sia Kim AI Weathercaster" and includes a notice stating it was produced using generative AI. Viewers initially mistook the images for actual network news footage. Kweather is actively utilizing AI weathercasters; in April, it held an audition with cable channel MBN to select one male and one female AI weathercaster. The AI announcer introduced by South Korea's Jeju Island reportedly costs approximately ₩600,000 per month. The debate encompasses cost reduction and operational efficiency, alongside controversy over the sexual objectification of the AI character's appearance and attire, which drew criticism for being excessively short and revealing, as well as concerns about information credibility.
