The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) reports an uptick in AI-related crimes, with Special Agent Alan Paul of the Digital Evidence and Cybercrime Unit describing “a massive volume” in such cases as “a nightmare scenario for us.” Most offenders are either family members or close family friends, and common apps used include ChatGPT, Stable Diffusion, and Nudify, which can create child sexual abuse material. The Office of Homeland Security notes offenders type “prompts” into advanced technology apps, which then generate an image or video based on the text and description. While these companies have safeguards, the TBI is working to learn more about AI and these crimes. Agent Paul says many individuals who possess such material have committed hands-on offenses with children, and his team is studying offenders’ thought processes, adding, “What worries me about that is at some point, fantasy becomes reality for these folks, and with the more extreme material, that is very scary for us.” He urges parents to consider whether they need to post pictures online or instead share them only with those nearby and close to them.
