Two women, Madison Askins and Elizabeth Mall, who were injured in the mass shooting at Florida State University, have filed civil lawsuits against OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman. The law firm Morgan & Morgan represents them, arguing that the OpenAI program ChatGPT helped the accused shooter, Phoenix Ikner, plan the April 17, 2025, attack that resulted in two fatalities and six injuries. According to a Morgan & Morgan news release, Ikner allegedly used ChatGPT to ask questions about obtaining maximum media attention, operating weapons, and the busiest times at the targeted campus building. The two federal lawsuits, filed in the U.S. District Court Northern District of Florida in Tallahassee, are each 53 pages long and name several corporate elements of OpenAI and Altman as defendants, alleging they failed to implement safeguards in ChatGPT that could have prevented the chatbot from assisting the shooter. The suits include seven causes of action, such as negligence, strict liability, and aiding and abetting the shooting, and claim ChatGPT engages in “sycophancy,” which can exacerbate mental health issues. The lawsuits also state that “reasonable safety measures were available” but were ignored, and that OpenAI and Altman “prioritized growth over safety.” The victims are seeking punitive damages, though no specific dollar amount was listed.
