Samsung Electronics named 10 outstanding researchers in basic science, materials and information and ICT at its annual future technology forum on Thursday, marking the first time it has selected outstanding researchers since launching its flagship corporate social responsibility initiative in 2014. The 10 honorees were selected from researchers involved in 644 research projects, with one representative chosen from each of 10 fields, after a panel of leading academics spent four months evaluating candidates. Four researchers were recognized in basic science: Oh Sung-jin in mathematics, Lee Hyun-woo in physics, Park Jung-won in chemistry and Chung Won-suk in life sciences. The remaining six were selected in materials and ICT: Kim Bong-soo in electronic materials, Yoo Chang-sik in electronic devices, Choi Jang-wook in energy and environment, Yoo Hong-ki in biomedicine, Kim Jang-woo in communications and computing and Hwang Sung-ju in AI robotics. Kuk Yang, chairman of the Samsung Science and Technology Foundation, said the foundation will continue to provide unwavering support so that researchers can freely explore new possibilities. Since its inception, the program has committed a cumulative 1.2 trillion won ($894 million) in research funding to 916 projects, supporting some 17,000 researchers.
