Anthropic is expected to beat OpenAI to public markets with a blockbuster IPO later this year despite recent doomsday warnings, though questions remain about business models and whether regulators should step in. Concerns escalated after Jacob Coxon resigned from Anthropic last week, warning the industry was "gambling with our lives," drawing support from former colleagues. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called for AI development to slow down but did not address the IPO. Anthropic could submit its risk disclosure to the SEC as early as this month. Chamath Palihapitiya said investors would demand an enormous discount if safety concerns proved true, while Brad Gerstner downplayed them, saying an IPO brings transparency and citing SpaceX, which raised a record $85 billion in its June IPO but lost around a quarter of its value since peaking at around $202 a share. Anthropic's IPO performance will set the tone for OpenAI's debut next year, with Microsoft, Amazon, Google and Nvidia holding significant stakes. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the company would delay its IPO until 2027, citing safety concerns, calling it an "ill-advised moment." OpenAI is in talks with investors about raising a new round of funding.
