Princeton University Press Partners with Cashmere on AI Licensing

Princeton University Press (PUP) has signed a partnership with Cashmere, an AI content licensing platform, to make the publisher's catalog available to "copyright compliant" AI platforms. The deal will use Cashmere's infrastructure to license PUP books for discovery by emerging AI research tools, with a focus on retrieval augmented generation (RAG) licensing, i.e. live search and information retrieval. Under the agreement, PUP retains control over which titles are licensed and on what terms, and Cashmere's "no-LLM-training" model is meant to keep the arrangement aligned with existing licensing norms in publishing. Cashmere's CEO, Jonathan Munk, said the goal is to give publishers confidence and tools to participate in the AI economy on their own terms. PUP director Christie Henry added that the partnership gives the press infrastructure to make content available on terms defined by PUP, with transparency, ethics, and accountability. The deal adds PUP to a growing roster of Cashmere partners, which includes Rockefeller University Press and Springer Publishing. Cashmere, which earlier this year closed a $5 million seed round led by Reach Capital, with Ingram Content Group, Pearson, and Naver participating, built the integration behind the Wiley-Perplexity licensing partnership and handles Perplexity's premium data integrations. Cashmere's technology parses publisher content into a structured format for AI systems rather than exposing full text, with licensing priced per-token, per-use, or per-relationship.
