Getty Images signed a licensing deal with OpenAI last month, described as a 'display' agreement where licensed content will appear in ChatGPT's search results. This follows Getty's lawsuit against Stability AI, which accused the developer of training its image-generation tool, Stable Diffusion, on millions of Getty’s images without permission. In November, the High Court in London rejected most of Getty Images’ claims, though the decision is currently under appeal. Crucially, the new deal does not mean that OpenAI can use Getty content to train any of its AI tools. This 'display-only' model, similar to a recent deal with Perplexity, provides a new licensing revenue stream for Getty while protecting its content from being used to improve potential competitors. According to Craig Peters, CEO of Getty Images, the deal makes 'AI‑powered search and discovery more useful and more trustworthy'. Users whose prompts return a Getty image will still need a licence directly from Getty to reproduce it.
