OpenAI’s first smart speaker, a portable donut-shaped device with cameras, speakers, and ChatGPT, is set to compete directly with the Apple HomePod. According to Bloomberg, the smart speaker is roughly the size of a hockey puck, with a diameter of about 7.6 centimeters, and features a built-in battery for carrying between rooms. Part of the casing can move via a motor to provide visual feedback during conversations, an LED indicates when the device is listening, and a camera and other sensors allow ChatGPT to see and react to its surroundings. Developed in collaboration with Apple’s former chief designer, Jonathan Ive, the device uses high-quality materials such as metal, contributing to a price between $300 and $400, making it more expensive than the Amazon Echo Studio ($219 on Amazon). The launch is reportedly scheduled for 2027.
