The Japanese government is considering providing a total of 11.5 billion yen in subsidies to 15 companies to expand overseas marketing of anime, manga and related entertainment, including support for translating works into foreign languages. The subsidy program would encourage recipients to use generative AI to speed localization and help fight piracy, and aims to triple overseas sales to 20 trillion yen by 2033. Likely beneficiaries include Crunchyroll, Shueisha, Kodansha, Bandai Namco and Square Enix. Concerns have been raised about impacts on professional translators and localization quality.
