A 36-year-old farmer in Brazil was arrested after discussing with ChatGPT plans to murder his eight-year-old son, attack police officers, and thoughts of suicide over a period of two months, BBC reports. The FBI sent information about the potentially dangerous user to the Brazilian Ministry of Justice after receiving it from OpenAI. Police in the state of Espírito Santo assigned high priority to the case, considering the man intended to harm the child before June 20. The investigation revealed he had little contact with his son and only paid child support, possibly a motive. A search of his home found bottles with unknown substances and a rope with a noose; he had searched for information about poisons, including ricin, and tried to bypass the neural network's protective algorithms. In his messages, he spoke of hiring a hitman for himself and the child and considered attacks on schools, churches, or police officers to provoke return fire. After 54 days in custody, he was released on August 13 under an electronic bracelet with a prohibition on approaching his son. Investigators are examining his phone and analyzing seized items. His lawyer denies guilt, claiming the client shared "all sorts of nonsense" and took no practical steps, and points to evidentiary issues since OpenAI provided only text queries without clarifying what ChatGPT generated, creating legal debate about text logs and whether the AI provoked the user. The case is one of the first where an automated threat detection system on an AI platform led to an arrest before a violent act.
