Sal Khan, founder of Khan Academy, has been a prominent figure in U.S. education, praised by Bill Gates and Michelle Obama, with a 2011 TED Talk garnering some 6 million views. In May 2023, he declared in a TED Talk that artificial intelligence represented "probably the biggest positive transformation that education has ever seen," arguing it could personalize lessons for every student. After early access to ChatGPT, he developed the chatbot Khanmigo, which he touted on "60 Minutes" and in his book "Brave New Words." However, in an April interview with Chalkbeat, Khan acknowledged that for "a lot of students," Khanmigo "was a non-event," as many "just don't use it much." In a July conversation with Monitor AI Bureau Chief Aaron Glantz, Khan explained that while the AI was designed to be Socratic and provide transparency, having that extra layer of support wasn't enough for many students. He compared it to a tutor sitting in the back of a classroom, noting some kids might be too embarrassed to engage. He also observed that the easiest thing for a student to do is cut and paste the Google search's AI summary to get the answer, rather than engaging with the offered path. Despite these challenges, Khan retains his optimism about AI's future in education.
