OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said India has become ChatGPT's biggest market in terms of users, with the number of ChatGPT users in India higher than in the US, and that people in India are more optimistic about AI than those in the United States. Speaking to Raj Shamani on his podcast, Altman said Indians are not just using AI for everyday tasks but are also finding new ways to build companies, and he believes the country's fast-growing economy is one reason behind this positive attitude. Asked about the difference in optimism, Altman said it could be because of the pace of economic growth, explaining that countries developing faster, where the economy is growing faster, are more welcoming of AI than more developed economies, and that developing countries often have a greater need for products and services that AI could help meet. He also cited a young student in India who needed to raise money for his school and, despite having no previous fundraising experience, managed to complete the entire process using OpenAI's tools. Altman said AI offers a big opportunity for builders, calling it probably the best time in history to build something and make a new company, and encouraged founders to explore ideas that may not seem obvious to everyone, since some of the biggest opportunities come from understanding a technology before others recognise its potential.
