Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth contradicted Mark Zuckerberg’s AI manifesto during a Q&A last month, responding to an employee’s question about AI productivity gains and time off by saying, “I hope that what we do with our extra time is to do even more and cooler stuff for the users who use our products every day.” Bosworth also framed asking for more days off as a career strategy question. Zuckerberg’s manifesto promised “personal empowerment” and argued the U.S. should not restrict access to open-source models, questioning why AI discourse was “so filled with doom.” He wrote that “The notion that AI is so dangerous that the only safe path is an extreme concentration of power seems inherently problematic,” while calling for collaboration with the government and reducing training guardrails. Meta released a “permissive” open source license for Muse Glimmer, a lightweight AI model that can run on a personal computer. Zuckerberg urged reconsidering distillation, saying, “Some have tried to frame distillation as harmful, but I think it is important to protect the principle that you can learn from anything you can observe.” He pledged to build energy-generating infrastructure “wherever we invest” and commit to “restore more water than we use in the watersheds where we operate by 2030.” Forbes reported Meta will launch a $1 billion “Future Is For Everyone Fund” to support communities near its data centers.
