Lightcone Commons Launches: New Algorithm Aims to Fix AI Safety Phila…

Oliver Habryka, CEO of Lightcone Infrastructure, launched Lightcone Commons on July 23, a new software-first grant platform designed to address coordination failures in AI safety philanthropy. The first round is expected to distribute $15–25 million in grants to AI safety and existential risk organizations, with applications open at lightconecommons.com and a deadline of August 23, 2026. The launch is timed before anticipated public listings: Anthropic filed a confidential S-1 with the SEC on June 1, 2026, targeting a public listing as early as October, while OpenAI’s IPO is expected in 2027. Habryka aims to provide a vetted mechanism for newly liquid donors from those companies. Habryka noted that "successfully giving away many millions of dollars without falling prey to grifters, confidence games, or plain bureaucratic conformity, is a great challenge." The platform addresses structural dysfunction where wealthy donors face adversarial pitches, scattered information, and duplication of funding. Zvi Mowshowitz, a confirmed evaluator for Round 1, described the incumbent Survival and Flourishing Fund’s most recent round, which involved more than 200 applications after initial filtering, as a process "clearly breaking down."
