Stripe is in preliminary discussions to acquire AI model marketplace OpenRouter in a transaction valued at about $10 billion, according to a report attributed to The Wall Street Journal. The talks remain at an early stage, meaning there is no completed acquisition at this point. The reported price would value OpenRouter at nearly eight times the $1.3 billion valuation it secured during a funding round in May. Founded in 2023 by Alex Atallah, OpenRouter provides access to more than 400 large language models supplied by over 70 providers, including models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, xAI and DeepSeek. OpenRouter raised $113 million in a Series B round led by CapitalG, with participation from Andreessen Horowitz, Menlo Ventures and Sequoia, lifting its valuation to approximately $1.3 billion. The reported valuation reflects the figure associated with preliminary negotiations, and the discussions may not necessarily result in a transaction.
