China's AI industry has created a market where people are paid to license their faces for AI-generated entertainment, with contributors earning up to 5,000 yuan (about US$700). Platforms like ActID and New Claw allow creators to browse licensed faces; ActID charges licensing fees from 99 yuan to 500 yuan (about US$15 to US$70) per episode with a 10% commission, while New Claw charges at least 500 yuan (about US$70) per image. ActID had about 800 users, 300 licensed faces, and 10 likenesses used in AI dramas. The niche grows alongside China's AI microdrama industry, where more than 10,000 AI-generated animated microdramas have been released each month since early 2026, and the comic-style market reached roughly 16.8B yuan (about US$2.3B) in 2025. Concerns about ownership and control persist; in Shanghai, model Xu Fang, 21, declined to sell his face after suing a fashion brand for unauthorized use. The Guangzhou Internet Court has reportedly handled about 700 disputes involving AI-generated likenesses over the past three years.
