OpenAI began rolling out "ChatGPT for Word," an add-in for Microsoft Word, on September 17, displaying ChatGPT in Word's sidebar so users can complete drafting, summarization, text revision, and formatting adjustments for the open document on a single screen. All ChatGPT plans, including the free tier, are eligible, and the add-in is shared across Excel and PowerPoint. The feature can generate drafts of proposals and reports, summarize entire documents, produce executive summaries, and adjust wording; users can issue natural-language instructions for headings, numbering, and formatting, and detect inconsistent terminology or unclear phrasing. Users install the add-in from the Microsoft Marketplace, open ChatGPT from Word's ribbon, and sign in; in enterprise environments, both the ChatGPT workspace administrator and the Microsoft 365 administrator must enable access. Users can pull in information from supported connections such as Outlook, SharePoint, Google Workspace, and Dropbox, and the Skills feature saves instructions for recurring tasks as templates. Plugins are not currently supported. Complex formatting, tables, and charts may require manual adjustment, and the tool cannot directly reference local files other than the open Word document. OpenAI advises users to verify important facts, figures, citations, and changes themselves. Usage is calculated on a token basis depending on the model, document size, and task, with plan-specific usage limits applied. Anthropic announced on September 16 that it integrated Claude Cowork into its main chat function and introduced "Claude Docs" and "Claude Slides"
