Data and Technology Executive Vukosi Sambo said AI, digital skills and remote work are creating income opportunities for young people in Gaza amid conflict, with unemployment pushed from about 22% to more than 80%. Speaking to VOC News, Sambo said AI-related freelance work and remote employment allow Palestinians to access international opportunities without leaving their communities, with many earning in foreign currencies for financial stability. He cautioned that reliable internet access remains a major challenge, noting that connectivity must be fairly reliable and work must accommodate occasional disruptions. Sambo highlighted organisations including Gaza Sky Geeks, Gaza Talents and Gigs for Gaza for helping youth develop digital skills and access payment platforms, describing these initiatives as “green shoots” providing a lifeline while broader peace efforts remain essential. Beyond Gaza, he said the rise of AI and remote work reflects a global employment shift, arguing countries such as South Africa must focus on leadership and strategic intent to integrate technologies effectively, as the technology is readily available and fairly easy to build and integrate.
