An army of AI-enabled robot "nandroids" is being introduced to elderly social care in England, with more than 20 residents at Hazelhurst Court, a retirement block in Lewisham, using the small droids. Vera Gadsdon, 73, named her robot Robert, which reminds her to take medication and plays music or TV shows on request. The robots, loaded with each person's calendar and medical needs, remind residents of activities and help them make video calls. Patricia Fordham, 82, says the robot makes her feel less lonely. Care worker Pinar Elmaz says the system provides round-the-clock support but does not replace human contact. Introduced by Cera, the UK's largest home care provider, the robots are used by at least 1,000 people across 14 local authorities in England. The droids have a 96% success rate in ensuring medication is taken on time, have boosted care capacity by 20%, and improved productivity by 80%. Local authorities save about £11,500 for each patient every year. The Genies will soon be programmed to call a neighbour, family member, carer, or 999 if help is needed, and could connect with wearables to monitor heart rate, temperature, or blood pressure. An AI tool analysing care worker data has reduced patient falls by 20% and halved avoidable hospital admissions, saving the NHS an estimated £2m a day.
