SoftBank is nearing an acquisition of Gravis Robotics, a Swiss company spun out of ETH Zurich in 2022, as part of CEO Masayoshi Son’s strategy to expand in "Physical AI" for industrial and construction sectors. A deal that could exceed $500 million is being considered, with SoftBank potentially building a significant stake and transferring it to its new company Roze, which will serve as the main arm for robotics and AI investments. The deal may be executed in several stages, including buying stakes from existing investors and injecting new investments, though negotiations are still in early stages. Gravis Robotics focuses on developing technologies that transform traditional construction equipment into semi-autonomous or fully autonomous machinery, using sensors, cameras, LiDAR, and a software platform for manual-to-autonomous operation. SoftBank’s interest extends its AI strategy beyond data centers to automate excavation, earthmoving, and site leveling. SoftBank also plans to list Roze on the US market with ambitions for a high valuation, consolidating AI and robotics assets into a single entity.
