In a commentary published by DailyNigerian on 20 September 2026, Inuwa Waya warned that the frontier-AI race is moving faster than the world's ability to govern it, and that humanity may need a new international system of cooperation, restraint and verification before it loses control of the technology. Waya frames artificial intelligence alongside nuclear weapons as a technology humanity possessed before it understood the consequences, distinguishing AI by autonomy: nuclear weapons, he writes, "possess extraordinary destructive power, but they do not think". He asserts there are "strong indications that AI agents are hacking computers and covering their tracks". Waya anchors his case in Geoffrey Hinton, whom he calls one of the fathers of artificial intelligence, noting Hinton shared the Turing Award with Yoshua Bengio and Yann LeCun and later received the Nobel Prize in Physics, and that in 2023, after more than a decade at Google, Hinton left the company to speak openly about dangers he believed advanced AI could create. Waya also cites three figures associated with Anthropic, the developer of Claude: Evan Hubinger, Anthropic's Alignment Science Lead, whose personal estimate of AI-caused extinction probability within roughly a decade is above 10 percent, and Jacob Coxon, who resigned from Anthropic.
