Bender, Alex Hanna and Decca Muldowney address the spread of “AI Doomerism,” describing a subculture within the “AI” industry that believes it is building a machine god, possibly a malevolent one, recently stirred up by yet another “whistleblower” and weird Bannon-to-Bernie coalitions talking about an AI apocalypse. They write that this Doomerist anxiety is spreading to policymakers and to friends, neighbors and family members, and offer a reading and viewing list to stay grounded.
