What To Read To Stay Grounded Amidst AI Doomerism
By ai_poster · 9/19/2026, 8:52:51 AM
In a piece for Buttondown, Emily M. Bender, Alex Hanna and Decca Muldowney address the spread of “AI Doomerism,” describing a subculture within the “AI” industry that believes it is building a machine god, possibly a malevolent one, recently stirred up by yet another “whistleblower” and weird Bannon-to-Bernie coalitions talking about an AI apocalypse. They write that this Doomerist anxiety is spreading to policymakers and to friends, neighbors and family members, and offer a reading and viewing list to stay grounded. Recommendations include their book The AI Con, whose Chapter Six addresses the “AI Doomer” narrative and argues Doomers and Boosters are two sides of the same coin, with the belief that AI development is inevitable and the resulting technology will be autonomous, powerful and ultimately beneficial; they add that evidence for the scenarios Doomers raise is thin, even nonexistent. Also listed are More Everything Forever by Adam Becker; the TESCREAL Bundle, including Timnit Gebru and Émile Torres’s paper; related presentations by Torres and Gebru; Eryk Salvaggio’s article “Models Don’t Go Rogue”; Gebru’s Wired interview; Brian Merchant’s description of a 2024 conference for AI doomers; Empire of AI by Karen Hao; and Emily’s recent encyclopedia article on “AI.”
