Alphabet Inc.’s Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis backed a broader open AI ecosystem, supporting Nvidia Corp. CEO Jensen Huang’s argument that the future of AI will require a balance between publicly available models and proprietary frontier systems. On Saturday, Hassabis shared Huang’s post on X, writing, "A strong and secure open ecosystem is important for the world to benefit from AI." He highlighted Google DeepMind’s contributions including JAX, Transformers, AlphaFold and Gemma open models, noting that Google’s Gemma models have been downloaded more than 300 million times. Huang shared a letter signed by Nvidia stating that "open models strengthen safety and cybersecurity, accelerate innovation and diffusion, and enable sovereignty," and argued, "The world needs both frontier closed models and frontier open models." On Friday, major technology leaders including Elon Musk, Satya Nadella and Mark Zuckerberg backed open-weight AI models, with Nadella calling them "essential to a healthy AI ecosystem" and Zuckerberg saying open source could empower users and prevent centralization.
