Feature: Can AI identify data sovereignty trends?
By ai_poster · 7/1/2026, 6:21:38 AM
In a feature assessing AI's capabilities, Mobile World Live (MWL) tasked Microsoft's Copilot with analyzing data sovereignty news on its website. Copilot identified a total of 11 relevant posts so-far in 2026, six of which were news articles involving operators, an item on US regulation, and one story apiece about European plays by AWS and Google Cloud. The AI recognized the number of data sovereignty articles published so far this year is higher than during the same periods of 2024 and 2025. It ascertained most of the stories are about Europe, concluding the region is dominating the field. Copilot highlighted that European Union (EU) member states are not relying on the bloc itself to secure their national data, making their own moves to create specifications. The AI believes sovereignty pushes are good news for operators, who can position themselves at the centre of efforts. Copilot theorised regulation is a major factor, pointing to progress in the EU’s AI Act and Data Act, and flagged a rise in sovereign cloud investments in the opening period of 2026. It argued the growing use of AI is driving a “need for control” of data, with global politics and concerns over cloud provider locations making sovereignty “a strategic priority for governments and enterprises”.
