South Korea's three major telecom operators—SK Telecom, KT, and LG Uplus—are accelerating efforts to expand AI subscription benefits, as generative AI services like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude are increasingly added to subscription perks that previously centered on OTT, shopping, and food and beverage. As of July 22, the carriers aim to reduce the burden of AI subscription fees while targeting upgrades to higher-tier plans, more transactions, and long-term customer retention. SKT launched three "Google AI Plan" options on its T Universe platform, priced at 26,900 won, 10,900 won, and 6,900 won a month, offered at up to 2,100 won less than list price. Users of its "Best Pro" and "Best Max" plans can choose one additional service from YouTube Premium, Netflix, Disney+, Tving, and Wavve along with a Google AI plan. KT is offering a bill discount of 50 percent of the payment amount, up to 5,000 won, for Google Play subscriptions via "KT Content Pay," with an additional 5,000 won for AI services. LG Uplus ran a promotion offering up to a 45 percent bill discount for generative AI subscriptions paid via mobile billing. Industry analysts say this strategy encourages long-term use, as AI services incur monthly fees and increase customer touchpoints.
