Dr. Richard Doty, director of the University of Pennsylvania's Smell and Taste Center, said the technology could enable continuous, objective odor monitoring not feasible with biological noses. The European Commission recently allocated €50 million toward research and development in this field, with Commissioner Mariya Gabriel noting potential impacts on public health and safety, including earlier disease detection and improved threat assessments. Applications are anticipated in environmental monitoring, food safety, and wine production, while developing regions, such as parts of Africa, could benefit from affordable, portable devices for detecting tuberculosis through volatile organic compounds in breath. Researchers still face technical challenges, including improving sensor sensitivity and selectivity and overcoming environmental interference. Dr. Hiroshi Ishida, a researcher in robotic olfaction at Tokyo University, stated the goal is to create systems that reliably function in diverse, real-world conditions.
