OpenAI has shut down its AI video-generation app Sora less than two years after its unveiling and will wind down its $1bn content partnership with Disney, the BBC understands. OpenAI told the BBC on Wednesday that it discontinued Sora to focus on other developments, such as robotics. A Disney spokesperson said "we respect OpenAI's decision to exit the video generation business." OpenAI is shutting down both the Sora consumer app and the internet-based platform for professionals. Since its launch, Sora made $1.4m in global net in-app revenues, compared to $1.9bn over the same period for ChatGPT, according to data from Seema Shah of Sensor Tower. Forrester analyst Thomas Husson called it "a resource black hole" with "limited monetisation," noting the platform struggled to prevent non-consensual imagery, misinformation, and copyright infringement. Henry Ajder, an AI and deepfakes expert, said "given OpenAI is still unprofitable and pressure from investors and rivals is growing, this is cash they likely decided they can't afford to continue burning." In December, Disney became the first major studio to license IP to OpenAI for a three-year deal allowing Sora users to create videos with characters like Mickey Mouse and Yoda.
