A new Google study analyzing nearly 15 million interactions with Gemini found that AI use is widespread across professions but has not yet become a major job automation force. The report, known as ATLAS, analyzed 14.65 million anonymous interactions over two weeks in April. Gemini usage covered 70% of professions, accounting for 90% of U.S. employment, but the average worker uses AI for only 21% of tasks, with less than 10% of interactions aimed at automating non-routine cognitive work. Google found that people mostly use Gemini as a partner for research, drafting, and troubleshooting rather than delegating entire tasks. Workers in high-paying jobs and wealthier regions use AI more; a 1% increase in median earnings by profession is associated with a 2.68% increase in AI usage. Blue-collar workers used more multimodal AI than expected, including electricians and auto repair workers. Non-work interactions accounted for 86% of conversations in Gemini, with consumers using it for cooking, cleaning, and navigating government services. The study did not account for business-oriented tools like Gemini Enterprise.
