The Block 409 Ang Mo Kio Market and Food Centre in Singapore officially reopened on Aug 9 after two months of upgrading works, with Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Ang Mo Kio GRC MP Nadia Ahmad Samdin officiating the reopening as part of SG61 celebrations. The upgrading works ran from June 8 to Aug 7 and included new tables and chairs, additional ceiling and exhaust fans, refurbished toilets, replaced floor and wall tiles, energy-efficient LED lighting, and more bird spikes. During the reopening, SM Lee and Nadia launched Little Red Bot, an artificial intelligence-powered robotic sweeper developed by Ang Mo Kio Town Council (AMKTC) with cleaning services company Maint-Kleen. The robot autonomously navigates common areas, picks up litter such as cigarette butts, cans, plastic bottles and fallen leaves, and returns to its docking station when it rains. A real-time monitoring system tracks its waste bin and alerts cleaners via a mobile app when full. AMKTC chairman Henry Kwek said the deployment showed how AI could support cleaning teams, improve productivity, and deliver better services, adding that the town council would continue exploring AI capabilities. The robot complements cleaners by handling repetitive sweeping tasks. Earlier on Aug 9, SM Lee attended the National Day Observance Ceremony at Teck Ghee Community Club, joining more than 1,000 residents, national servicemen, community partners, and students.
