The Gates Foundation plans to commit at least USD 1 billion over the next two years to expand access to artificial intelligence, AI-powered tools and technical expertise, with a focus on health, education, agriculture and digital infrastructure, aiming to address concerns that rapid advances could deepen existing inequalities and to reach communities with historically limited access to digital technologies. Africa could become an important beneficiary, though allocation by country or region has not been disclosed, and the foundation already supports AI-related projects across the continent. The commitment was announced on September 14, alongside the 10th annual edition of its Goalkeepers report. The foundation noted that more than 90% of the data used to train the first generation of large language models came from English-language sources, raising concerns about effectiveness for populations using other languages, and said the investment is expected to support technologies designed around local contexts. Agriculture is expected to benefit, with AI potentially providing smallholder farmers recommendations based on local soil conditions, weather patterns, crops and farming practices.
