SMU DataArts has partnered with artist and researcher Annie Dorsen on a multi-method study examining the real-world economic and professional impacts of generative AI on performing artists in theater, dance, and live music. The initiative aims to generate actionable insights that can inform policy, funding, and field-wide support, as there is currently little large-scale, empirical data on how generative AI is affecting artists’ income, work processes, and career sustainability. Artists working in these disciplines are invited to participate by completing a brief survey, which includes questions about the real-world impacts of GenAI on their work, incomes, and creative futures. The study is not focused on student use, AI developers introducing new products, or GenAI use by performing arts managers or administrators. Researchers state that shared input will help shape understanding of how GenAI tools affect professional performing artists, potentially driving critical policy and support. The survey takes about 15 minutes to complete and closes on Sept. 8, 2026. Findings will be shared publicly once the data has been analyzed and synthesized.
