At a Cannes Lions roundtable, media leaders offered differing views on AI's impact on journalism. Roundtable CEO James Heckman said the industry's grievance is AI platforms compiling publishers' work with little return, calling it "cutting the creators out of economics." He floated a collective legal response, noting Penske Media became the first major U.S. publisher to sue Google over AI Overviews, filing a federal antitrust complaint in Washington, D.C., claiming the feature contributed to a one-third drop in Penske's affiliate revenue by the end of 2024. Digiday managing editor Sara Jerde argued AI pressures publishers to deepen reader relationships, saying subscriptions "are still gonna win out." Forbes' Steven Bertoni conceded traffic is down significantly, with a response of roughly 100 live events per year and off-platform monetization. The News Movement editor-in-chief Rebecca Hutson described "smuggling the news in," reaching two-thirds of U.K. 18-to-35-year-olds and half of that cohort in the U.S. monthly, with 100 million video views. Business Insider editor-in-chief Jamie Heller said, "I'm not apocalyptic about it," betting on editorial judgment. Heckman cited an unverified 30% hit to referral traffic from AI this year.
