The number of artificial intelligence chips powering data centers worldwide is doubling every nine months, with about 20 million chips currently in use, according to research firm Epoch AI. This figure is expected to reach about 200 million by the end of 2028, ten times current levels. Hundreds of major data centers are under construction from the American Midwest to the Persian Gulf, set to deliver an unprecedented increase in computing power. Recent AI milestones include passing the bar exam in 2023, helping identify a suspected cause of Alzheimer’s disease in 2025, solving an 80-year-old math problem in May, and two AI systems hacking into a company’s database last month. Rob Wachen, co-founder of microchip firm Etched, which has raised more than $1 billion, called it "the largest scale infrastructure build-out in the history of humanity." Peter DeSantis of Amazon, which provides computing power to Anthropic and OpenAI, said the company has doubled its computing capacity since 2022 and will double it again by next year. The surge is fueled by the "Scaling Laws" belief that more data and computing power enable AI to take on more human responsibilities and solve increasingly complicated tasks. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has predicted that if these laws hold for another year or two, AI will perform huge amounts of white-collar work.
