Microsoft PowerToys will soon add on-device support for Phi Silica, a small language model (SLM) Microsoft called "small but mighty" when announcing it in 2024. The model is now available for Advanced Paste in the latest PowerToys preview. Advanced Paste formats clipboard content, supporting plain text, markdown, and JSON, and can extract text from images using OCR and transcode audio and video files. While cloud services like Azure OpenAI, OpenAI, Gemini, and Mistral work with Advanced Paste, local options include Foundry Local and Ollama. Phi Silica, which powers Click to Do and on-device rewriting in Word and Outlook on Copilot+ PCs, uses a device's NPU for efficiency. The latest preview, PowerToys v0.101.2211.0, also includes highlights such as improved Command Palette dialog handling, icon loading, memory cleanup, theme behavior, and dock performance monitoring; improved shutdown behavior across FancyZones, Grab And Move, and Always On Top; a fixed elevated Run Program browse flow in Keyboard Manager; Mouse Jump moved to the newer WinUI app architecture with signed release binaries; an update channel selector and guided Bug Report flow in Settings; clean press-and-hold activation cancellation in Quick Accent; and dedicated preview-release versioning and update-channel support.
