The MTN Foundation, in partnership with SAIL Innovation Lab and Co-Creation Hub, concluded a training session with educators across Nigeria as part of its 12-week Teachers Programme. The initiative, established with Senator Abiru Innovation Lab (SAIL), aims to equip classroom teachers with artificial intelligence (AI) tools and skills. Oluwatobi Olayanju, a data scientist and business analyst at Data Science Nigeria, facilitated the programme’s 10th week, leading a virtual session on AI literacy, responsible technology use, and practical AI integration into lesson delivery. Attendees reported gains in skills ranging from 2D animation and cloud-based note-taking to AI-powered lesson planning and content creation. The programme is a corporate-led education intervention in Nigeria, where UNESCO says over 10.2 million primary school-aged children are out of school, the highest number in the world, and nearly 20 million when including secondary-age adolescents. A 2022 survey by the Brookings Institution found that fewer than 30 per cent of sub-Saharan African teachers had received any form of digital skills training. Olayanju introduced participants to AI tools including chatbots for lesson planning, visual design platforms, text-to-video and text-to-audio converters, and assessment generators, as well as ditchthattextbook.com, a centralized repository for resources. The session included an interactive quiz via quiz.com.
