Nvidia's graphics processing units (GPUs) are being sent to the Moon to power the next generation of lunar exploration. Space robotics startup Lunar Outpost announced its next lunar rover will use Nvidia's Jetson platform to power its lidar system. If successful, it will likely become the first GPU ever to operate on the lunar surface. The Jetson platform is designed for compact, low-power devices, allowing the rover to analyze lidar data locally to understand its surroundings, avoid obstacles, and make navigation decisions in real time. Lunar Outpost CEO Justin Cyrus stated the company is comparing Nvidia's Jetson platform against its existing flight computer to determine if GPU-powered systems can become permanent in future space missions. The rover is part of NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) program, which pays private companies to develop robotic missions for exploring the lunar surface ahead of future astronaut landings. NASA is targeting a return of astronauts to the lunar surface as early as 2028. Lunar Outpost's rover will travel aboard a lunar lander built by Intuitive Machines. Its following mission is scheduled to explore Reiner Gamma, a mysterious region of the Moon known for its unusual magnetic properties.
