Anthropic, the maker of the Claude chatbot, has launched an all-out effort to obtain more computing power after running short last year, CEO Dario Amodei said at The New York Times’ DealBook Summit in December that the needed amount had become a “cone of uncertainty.” According to 14 people with knowledge of the AI lab, investors and industry experts, the San Francisco company signed dozens of contracts with former cryptocurrency miners, data center startups, chipmakers and tech giants like Amazon, Google, Microsoft and SpaceX, hired data center experts, bought data center equipment, met with developers, explored converting old coal plants and factories into data centers, and considered deals for tiny amounts of computing power. Anthropic has committed $895.4 billion through 2045 to computing power and chip deals it largely cannot back out of, according to its prospectus. This year it is expected to have more than 3.5 gigawatts of computing power, and next year it aims to double that amount. Its demands are intensifying its need to go public in an offering that could raise $100 billion, and it is raising debt financing, including $63 billion last week.
