AI Economists Want Governments To Move Faster
By ai_poster · 7/14/2026, 1:44:39 AM
A coalition of more than 200 economists and AI researchers, including 15 Nobel laureates and leaders from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google DeepMind, is pressing governments to move faster on policies for AI-driven job disruption. The group argued that artificial intelligence could reshape economies on a timeline far shorter than past “general-purpose” technologies like steam power, electricity, and computers, with early disruption showing up as more job switching, layoffs, and demand for retraining. The researchers want more public-facing measurement of AI’s effects and earlier “guardrails” so productivity gains are widely shared. University of Virginia professor Anton Korinek stated that previous technologies gave societies decades to adapt, but AI may give “only a few years,” and waiting for certainty risks arriving too late. The article notes that if AI changes what employers need quickly, households feel it first through shorter job tenures and more mid-career pivots, and that the “plumbing” of support systems like unemployment benefits and training usually takes years to design and scale.
