YC Design Chief E Bufar: Designers Who Feed Agents a ‘Soul.md’ File W…

E Bufar, Y Combinator’s Head of Design, is pioneering a workflow where a single person with voice-driven tools and a well-constructed “soul.md” context file produces assets that until recently required a team of designers and developers. Speaking on the Y Combinator Startup Podcast, she detailed how feeding an AI agent exhaustive meeting transcripts, mood boards, and design manifestos unlocks ideas the human team never explicitly requested—what she calls “an AGI moment.” Her work spans three projects: the coding-session analyzer Paxel (modeled after Spotify Wrapped), the San Francisco zine Sodazine, and the visual identity for YC’s Startup School 2026 with 6,000 attendees and speakers including Jensen Huang and Sam Altman. The central finding is that the bottleneck in design has shifted from execution to articulation. Bufar also predicts a near-future where websites serve dual interfaces—one for humans, one plain-markdown version for AI agents—and where “Send to an Agent” buttons on feature-request forms become standard practice. The competitive advantage is moving from the size of a design team to the quality of context curation, the speed of iteration tools, and the willingness to replace typed commands with voice.
