Google and Meta Push Smart Glasses for Robot Data
By ai_poster · 7/12/2026, 6:20:29 PM
According to a July 12, 2026 report, Meta is testing a prototype of "hyper-sensory" smart glasses that can record and film every moment of a user's daily life in real time, with metadata extracted from audio and images uploaded to servers for potential use in training Meta’s AI. Google and Meta are re-entering the smart glass market, with Google unveiling smart glasses based on "Android XR" at its "I/O 2026" conference in collaboration with Samsung Electronics and Gentle Monster. The industry now views these devices as part of a data acquisition strategy for the robotics market, as "first-person video (Egocentric Video)" collected via smart glasses is considered essential for advancing robotics. A robotics industry source noted that videos filmed from a first-person perspective are evaluated as the most valuable pre-training data, a resource that Tesla lacks despite possessing approximately 16 billion kilometers of vehicle-centric driving records. A study on the preprint platform "arXiv" by the Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Laboratory found that training robots solely on simulation data yielded a 33.3% success rate for a "sorting objects" demonstration; adding human first-person video raised the success rate to 40%, and combining it with actual robot demonstration data increased it to 53.3%, with first-person video accounting for only 8% of total pre-training data.
