At the 2026 World Internet Conference Wuzhen Summit opening in Wuzhen, Zhejiang Province on November 3, Alibaba Group co-founder and chairman Joe Tsai said AI demand keeps climbing while computing power falls short of demand, and that "only open source can drive widespread adoption, and only widespread adoption can create sustainable, inclusive intelligence for the era." Tsai disclosed that Qwen has open-sourced more than 470 models, with cumulative global downloads exceeding 4 billion and more than 330,000 derivative models. He argued Chinese tech companies have stepped up model open-sourcing and ecosystem openness, remaining ahead on key metrics such as open-source model downloads and derivative model counts, and have become the current global leader in open-source intelligence, saying "Chinese open-source models offer strong overall performance and high inference efficiency, and are widely acclaimed around the world." He said global AI development has accelerated over the past year, with AI extending into industrial manufacturing, healthcare, public services, corporate office work, scientific research and other fields, and the supply-demand gap in computing power will be hard to ease in the short term. Tsai said open-source models enable widespread, inclusive adoption for enterprises, help safeguard data security when deployed in their own data centers, drive the global developer ecosystem and lower R&D costs for small and medium-sized enterprises, especially in developing countries, and can help bridge the intelligence divide between countries and regions.
